Homemade Weight Gainer (Build Your Own)

This is an article which will help you build your own homemade weight gainer.

Are you the guy who can’t gain any weight even though you are eating all the time? Hey man, I know how you feel. I used to be just like you.

Unfortunately, what everybody is telling you is right. The trick is not in doing special kind of exercises in the gym, but in figuring out how to eat more food without your stomach exploding.

Fortunately, homemade weight gainer can be your savior. Drinking calories instead of eating it is going to make you less full rather than eating solid food. Therefore, it does help with weight gain and it is not surprising that weight gainer supplement business is so big. However, we do not need a fancy powder in order to make a shake with similar macro nutrient value. We can make our own at home!

What is a Weight Gainer?

Weight gainer is a powdered supplement that usually comes in big tubs. Content made out of protein, carbohydrate and sometimes fat source is mixed with water or milk.

However, weight gainer supplements are not necessary. You can easily make your own shake with similar macro-nutrient.

The reason why I still use a supplement is because of laziness and due to the fact that weight gainer supplements will be cheaper on the long term. Since not all supplements are made equal, make sure to do your research before purchasing one.

Why homemade?

If you feel like you want to have better control of what goes into your shake, homemade weight gainer is a way to go. You can get creative and make a different tasting shake every day.

You can easily build your own homemade shake by mixing protein, carbohydrate and fat sources together. You can regulate your own ratio in between the three of those. Therefore, you can always adjust it based on your daily macro-nutrient needs.

Benefits of a homemade weight gainer?

Caloric needs

Obviously, weight gainers are designed to fit more calories within our diet. Combining those calories with exercising, we will be on a good way to build some solid muscle mass.

Weight gainer supplements are obliged to disclose everything that the tub contains. However nobody really knows how honest they are being. That is due to FDA’s poor regulation of supplements. While the same could hold true for actual food, it is still considered to be safer and more natural to mix your own ingredient. Therefore, if you want to gain weight and have a sensitive stomach, going homemade is a good idea.

Time saving

Wanting to change appearance of your body will take time. Just like anything that is worth it. However, you can still save little bit of time by mixing some of you calories. Instead of preparing the entire meal, it will take just about three minutes to make a homemade weight gainer.

Homemade Weight Gainer (Make your own)

1. Pick your own carbohydrates

Nutrient rich cereal oat will be one of the main ingredients for your muscle gain. They are tasteless with very clean macronutrient ratio, full of fiber, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.

Bananas are another basic carbohydrate ingredient you will want to put into your shake. They will work to add flavor and smooth consistency to your homemade weight gainer. Just like oats, bananas contain important nutrients like fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Unlike other fruits, bananas are relatively low on sugar.

Frozen Fruits

Frozen Fruits are often cheaper and just as nutritious than regular. Because they are frozen, no unwanted additives which would preserve food are added. Frozen fruit will give you great nutritional benefits along with ability to change flavor.

While it is true that quinoa is rich in protein, it is still considered a carbohydrate source. That is because it contains 8x more carbohydrates then protein. It is extremely high in fiber, minerals and vitamins.  Due to being very nutritious, quinoa will be a good fit for a weight gainer shake.

These small nature candy can be used both in a blend or as a topping. They are high in fiber and different minerals. Beware it has little bit more sugar in them, therefore use them as a combination with other carbohydrates.

Amazing to think that somebody’s entire life purpose is to make this tasty carbohydrate source. Bees struggle everyday in order to help you escape hardgainer’s hell. But, are you using their product? Honey is a thick liquid filled with rich antioxidants and calories. While it is delicious, it should be taken in lower amounts due to high levels of sugar. Therefore, add it more as an sweetener and not as a base.

Cocoa Powder

Cocoa Powder is another ingredient which will enrich your homemade hardgainer shake. Cocoa powder offers many health benefits like being antibacterial, improving brain function and acts as anti-inflammatory. Those are the benefits that will help you with your workout and recover your muscles quicker.

2. Pick your own protein

Protein Powder

One of the easiest ways is to go with a protein powder. They come in many different flavors or even unflavored. On the long term, they will be a cheaper option, as well as extremely high on protein alone. That way, it will be easier to reach targeted protein intake. However, always do your research in order to know what you are putting into your body.

Liquid egg whites

Extremely high in protein and potassium. When mixed with other ingredients, you will not even notice the taste. I believe by now, we all know that high cholesterol risks have been debunked. That leaves us with only one big concern. Salmonella. Make sure to buy your eggs from your local farm, ideally with some chicken poop stuck on the shell.

Milk is an absolute classic ingredient when it comes to mixing any type of muscle shake. That is due to the reason that is adds extra calories and smoother consistency. While providing high protein, milk is also rich in vitamins, minerals and fat. Understand that it contains lactose, which can make your stomach irritated. However, just buy lactose-free milk if that is your case.

Plain Greek yogurt

Greek Yogurt is a special because it does not contain any whey. That produces more of a creamy texture. It is usually low in sugar and high on protein. Therefore, it has a great macronutrient ratio. Greek yogurt is high in probiotics, minerals and vitamins. It will add a nicer creamy consistency to your homemade weight gainer.

Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese is popular with athletes due to its fantastic macronutrient ratio. It is a big source of calcium and protein. It is made from curdled milk. While it might not taste the greatest by itself, it will fit well with other ingredients mixed.

3. Pick your own fat

Nuts like almonds, cashews, walnuts, hazelnuts and peanuts will enrich your homemade weight gainer by adding healthy essential fats. Most of them are high in fiber and minerals which will help your overall health. Some prefer to sprinkle pieces of nuts on top of the shake to make it more appealing for the eyes.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is sometimes being classified as a superfood. That is due to combination of its unique ingredients. Small amount of it will add pleasant flavor and calories to your shake.

Peanut butter

“If you want to get big, just peanut butter with everything!” While this is not always the best idea, quality peanut butter will help you reach your caloric target. Especially when talking about fat. Due to being cheap and tasty, it is one of the most popular fat source to add into homemade weight gainer.

Almond butter

Just like peanut butter, almond butter usually works just as well. It goes by personal preference and price can be even cheaper depending where in the world you live. Combine it with unsweetened almond milk for a delicious almond shake.

Lately, we have all been a witness to avocado hype. It seems like adding avocado to anything will raise its price by 20%. All that for a good reason. Avocados are not only nutrient rich due to its essential fat content. Avocados are known to contain fiber, vitamins and minerals. They aren’t just good for making guacamole, in fact avocado weight gainer shakes are extremely common among hardgainers.
